Parfex Launches NovaSilk for Alcohol-Free Fragrance Creation

Parfex is expanding the creative possibilities for alcohol-free perfumery with two new technologies. Developed by its sister company Iberchem, the NovaSilk® and NovaSilk® Clear systems offer alternatives to traditional alcohol-based formulas, supporting the growing trend for skin-friendly fragrance formats.

Fragrance is evolving beyond its classic alcohol-based foundations. The market is seeing a rise in mists, perfumed oils, hair mists, and hybrid products. This shift is part of the broader 'skinification' of fragrance, where consumer expectations now include comfort, texture, and a heightened sensorial experience. Alcohol-free and water-based formulas align with this movement.

Two Technologies for Sensory Diversity

Parfex's new offerings provide perfumers with distinct tools. NovaSilk® is based on a macroemulsion, giving formulas a milky or pearlescent look paired with a fluid, enveloping texture inspired by cosmetics. In contrast, NovaSilk® Clear uses a transparent microemulsion for a lighter and fresher sensory profile. Both systems can accommodate high concentrations of fragrance.

The source states these variants can handle fragrance loads of up to 20%. This capacity allows for different creative directions, from the rich, cocooning feel of NovaSilk® to the clarity and airiness of NovaSilk® Clear.

Maintaining Olfactive Performance

A key challenge for alcohol-free fragrance is sustaining performance. Parfex claims its technology meets this need. Eight-hour tests indicate that NovaSilk® maintains a more consistent olfactive presence on both skin and blotter paper compared to a standard ethanol-based formula.

Olivier Coli, Application Laboratory Manager at Parfex, explained the formulation shift. "Developing alcohol-free fragrances means rethinking formulation as a whole," he said. "With NovaSilk®, we can work with a different delivery system while maintaining long-lasting olfactive performance."

A Sustainable and Creative Approach

The concentrated format of NovaSilk® also presents sustainability benefits. By eliminating alcohol from production and transport, the technology helps optimize logistics and storage. Parfex states this reduces the carbon footprint associated with brands' supply chains.

For the company, these technologies are primarily creative tools. They enable perfumers to consider new parameters like texture, diffusion, touch, and perception during development. The goal is to support brands in creating products that exist at the intersection of perfumery and cosmetics.

By combining olfactive expertise with sensorial and formulation innovation, Parfex aims to turn the evolution of alcohol-free fragrance into a new creative field. The company can also leverage cosmetic active ingredients from its parent group, Croda, to explore formulas that pair an olfactive signature with a cosmetic benefit.
