The fragrance Aether from the American house Free Yourself is a cool, offbeat green floral composed by MANE perfumer Ralf Schwieger. Launched as part of the brand's Elements collection, it combines galbanum, blackcurrant, bell pepper, incense, narcissus, and vetiver.

Senior Editor Oli Marlow, writing for ÇaFleurebon, states the scent first stood out at a niche perfume show in London. Marlow describes it as a dark, thick, absolute stalk of a green, floral perfume that evokes the humid, tropical atmosphere of London's Barbican Conservatory, part of a celebrated brutalist complex.

The Concept and Composition

Free Yourself positions Aether within its Elements collection, which includes fire, water, earth, and air. The brand says the perfume explores the space between elements - where earth rises towards air and light. Marlow interprets this as conveying the feeling of plants rising from soil towards sunlight.

The reviewer suggests that, with imagination, one might detect hints of the other elemental concepts in Schwieger's work: a sense of height for air, a blue hint for water, intensity for fire, and an overall minerality for earth. The core smell, however, is distinctly vegetal and green.

The Scent Experience

Marlow compares the opening aroma to the humid, vegetal smell of a well-tended greenhouse in tomato season. To this base, the dry purple tones of hyacinth and the distinctive character of narcissus are added. The perfume uses salty impressions and pyrazines to exaggerate a natural, cut-green-vegetable tone.

The scent uniquely shifts between its mineral, floral, and green aspects. This creates what the review calls a quiet luminous freshness alongside a concentrated botanical depth. Schwieger's composition is described as a form of olfactory chiaroscuro, hiding a transient shock of pretty white floralcy behind the green shades to give lift and dynamism.

A Dramatic Contrast

The hidden floral element is likened to an olfactory highlighter or a bolt of sunlight cutting through foliage, casting layered shadows and making the scent feel three-dimensional. This dramatic quality makes Aether feel distinct even within its own collection.

Marlow notes that the other five perfumes in the Free Yourself lineup seem more direct. For example, Eau is a neat and nuanced orange blossom, while Numinous is a layered gourmand amber. In contrast, Aether is super dramatic: a bitterly green, slightly narcotic floral that takes a good while to contemplate and understand.

The review lists the fragrance's notes as Salty Blackcurrant, Bell Pepper Accord, Fresh Hyacinth, Incense Superessence, Narcissus Absolute, Geranium Essential Oil, May Rose Absolute, Galbanum Resinoid, Vetiver Essential Oil, Patchouli Absolute, and Noxolide™. The article concludes by noting ÇaFleurebon is running a giveaway for a 50ml bottle of Aether for readers in the USA, with entries closing on September 8, 2026.
